The Athletic Platform Expands Sports Subscription With 20 Novel Podcasts

The sports based website plans to deliver twenty podcasts which primarily focus on national and local news.

The Athletic is a subscription based platform which mainly focusses on providing national and local news to its subscribers in over forty seven North American cities. The platform reportedly is planning on delivering twenty new podcasts to 1, 00, 000 subscribers. The paid subscribers will be delivered with local and national news. On April 9, 2019, the platform officially launched its novel podcast venture which will display shows concerning NHL, MLB, NBA and NFL. The platform is also planning to include fifteen other podcasts which will cover the local sports taking place in Toronto and Bay Area.

The platform commenced in 2016, and launching such ambitious content in such a short duration of time is a great achievement. The newly setup company was very sure that the users will be willing to pay subscription charges concerning the fact that national and local news are provided very less coverage in traditional forms of media. The company has many position holders who were former journalists in sport media outlets such as ESPN, some of the known people are Peter Gammons and Jayson Stark. The new podcast will include shows “The Opener,” featuring Jonah Keri, former worker at the ESPN, “The TK Show”, featuring Tim Kawakami, a former columnist at the Mercury News. However, apart from this, the company has different shows which already cover NBA and local sports news such as the ‘The Daily Ding,” and “Birds All Day.” The latter show is hosted by Andrew Stoeten and Drew Fairservice covering the Toronto Blue Jays.

The new podcasts launched will be exclusive to The Athletic platform and will not be available on other platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. Thus, The Athletic is one more platform that is experimenting with podcasts in 2019, which is the new trend hitting many platforms.
